The Kogi East Political and Economic Summit Group (KEPESG) has thrown its weight behind the bid for a third term of office by Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho, describing his continued representation as crucial to restoring the political influence and socio-economic advancement of Kogi East Senatorial District.

Speaking to journalist during a press conference in Abuja, the convener of the group, Comrade Okpanachi Jacob made the endorsement on behalf of the group while unveiling what it called a “clarion call” for strategic continuity in the district’s representation at the National Assembly.

KEPESG, a coalition of civil society organisations from Kogi East, said its decision followed extensive consultations and a “careful assessment of prevailing political realities” in the region.

According to the Okpanachi, Kogi East has experienced a steady decline in political dominance since 2015, when it last held the governorship of Kogi State, a development it said necessitated a stronger consolidation of influence at the federal level.

He argued that retaining Senator Echocho would enhance the district’s chances of securing key leadership positions in the National Assembly, thereby increasing its bargaining power in national decision-making.

He also maintained that continued representation by the senator would help bridge what it described as a lingering “power gap” created by the region’s loss of the governorship seat, while strengthening its voice in federal politics.

“Returning Senator Echocho increases our chances of securing principal leadership positions in the National Assembly, thereby amplifying the voice and bargaining power of our district,” the group said.

KEPESG further described its endorsement as part of a broader push for what it called self-determined leadership, insisting that the people of Kogi East must be allowed to shape their political direction without external imposition.

The group also highlighted continuity as a key factor in its decision, noting that a third term would enable the senator to consolidate ongoing legislative and developmental initiatives.

While cautioning against what it termed “politics of surrogacy,” the group urged political parties to prioritise experienced and competent candidates over “political neophytes,” warning that poor choices could reverse existing gains.

KEPESG, however, stressed that it remains a non-partisan platform committed to advocacy and political engagement across party lines, as long as candidates demonstrate capacity and commitment to development.

Okpanachi concluded that the endorsement was aimed at fostering unity and strategic thinking within Kogi East, adding that sustained representation at the federal level remains key to repositioning the district for greater relevance and development.
