2027: Why Shehu Hassan Hussain must be re-elected

By Dapo Ipoola

Re-election is the act of voting a person back into a position, office, for another term. It applies to political roles or corporate directors, often occurring after a performance review, such as the second/three-year re-election cycles. Re-election comes with critical and painstaking assessment of performance, as this determines whether the electorate will key into the re-election bid or not. Many politicians have lost their re-election bids as a result of poor or abysmal performance. Underrepresentation is also another way of losing out in re-election. In many cases, sound and vibrant representation have always paved way for many to be re-elected as many as possible terms. In parliamentary, soundness of representation is a desideratum for re-election.

In Nasarawa federal constituency, Kano, the representation of MHR Shehu Hassan Hussain in the green chamber calls for re-election. If not for anything but for diligent and dutiful representation. Over the years, he has demonstrated accountability driven with purpose and love for his constituents. His representation has been that of robust and all-encompassing in every ramification. In terms of giving back to his constituency, his impacts are palpable as he has expressed deep worry over the rising insecurity in the Northern part of the country, calling for urgent recruitment into security agencies, constitutional amendment for State policing, and stronger support for local vigilante efforts, urging government actions to protect citizens and restore peace in insecurity ravaged areas.

As an avuncular representative, he has sponsored bills for the establishment of the Federal Vocational Skills Acquisition College in Yankaba, Kano State; National Institute for Cardiovascular Disease Research and Treatment, Kano State; establishment of Mortgage Bankers and Brokers; National Centre for Substance Abuse, Management and Treatment; Violence against Persons Prohibition Amendment Bill. As an active representative, he has moved the motion for the need to rehabilitate and adequately equip the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital; the need to address the collapsing state of Bompai, Sharada and Challawa industrial estates in Kano State; the need to investigate the activities of the Bureau of Public Enterprise(BPE) in the privatization and commercialization of public enterprises from 2019-2023.

In giving back to his constituents as a way of showing gratitude for the confidence reposed in him to represent them, he has constantly given assistance to people with special needs and the aged citizens; distributed capital support for small businesses; supported women cooperatives and other community based organizations; provided tools and equipment to artisans and local businesses; distributed learning materials to primary and secondary schools across his constituency; provided scholarships and educational supports for students; installed solar powered boreholes across all the wards in his constituency; drilled hundreds of solar powered boreholes and hand pumps machines across the constituency; provided comprehensive water supply scheme in Kaura Goj; donated 500 KVA transformers to communities who are in blackout; refurbished, modernized, and equipped Gwagwarwa mini stadium; constructed primary health care centre in Yandodo, Hotoron Area; constructed primary health care centre in Dakota; constructed skills acquisition centre at Kawo, Giginyu; constructed modern toilets at Hotoron Kudu primary school, and blocks of classrooms at Hotoron Kudu primary school.

Known for upholding educational values, youth empowerment and infrastructure, MHR Shehu Hassan Hussain has within three years in office constructed roads in Tudun Wada, Tudun Murtala, Hotoron Kudu, Gawuna, Bukar Bulori Layin Madaci, and Kaura Goje. For the premium that he places on education, he has constructed modern classrooms in Ladanai, Hotoron Area, Dakota, and Tinshama, Normadic primary schools across his constituency. For the hapless students, he has sponsored the payment of registration fees for undergraduate students at BUK, Northwest University, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Federal University of Dutse and Ahmadu Bello University; constructed Mai Aminu Mai Diwani Islamic school, Tudun Wada; granted hundreds of students on full scholarship at Kano State Polytechnic, Kano State College of Preliminary Studies, KASCEPS, and Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso; and thousands of poor indigent students have been sponsored in WAEC, NECO and JAMB. In the nearest future when posterity beckons, MHR Shehu Hassan Hussain will be remembered as that one representative who prioritized the well-being of his constituents above pecuniary gains.
