2027: Itsekiri Group pushes alliance with Urhobo, Ijaw for common interest

2027: Itsekiri Group pushes alliance with Urhobo, Ijaw for common interest

The Itsekiri Grassroots Coalition has called for a united political front among Itsekiri people across Delta and Edo states, saying collective action is key to strengthening their political relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group said challenges facing the Itsekiri ethnic nationality since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 include issues such as ward delineation, minority status in some local government areas, and electoral arrangements in parts of the Warri axis.

Addressing journalists, the National Coordinator of the group, Prince Collins Edema, noted that despite the presence of Itsekiri communities beyond Warri, their political influence has been affected by fragmentation and limited coordination across Delta Central, Delta South, and parts of Edo State.

He explained that the coalition was formed to foster unity among Itsekiri communities and ensure their collective interests are effectively represented in political engagement and electoral processes.

Edema said, “Our people are spread across multiple local governments where we exist as minorities. Without a united front, our voices will continue to be limited. This coalition is about inclusion, equity, and ensuring that our presence translates into meaningful representation.”

On inter-ethnic relations, the group called for closer cooperation with neighbouring ethnic nationalities, particularly the Urhobo and Ijaw, emphasising dialogue and mutual understanding.

“We believe we have shared interests with the Urhobo and Ijaw. It is important to strengthen cooperation based on fairness, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in the interest of development,” he said.

While reaffirming support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ahead of 2027, the coalition said consultations are ongoing regarding candidates for key legislative positions, adding that it would support individuals who promote unity and the broader interests of the Itsekiri people.
