DJ Pretty Play has revealed that her planned 288-hour Guinness World Record attempt for the longest marathon club DJing session is driven by a personal resolve to stop being overlooked and to amplify women’s visibility in the entertainment space.

Speaking with Potpourri, the DJ said the decision was not inspired by fame, but by years of quietly putting in the work while the industry rewarded hype over discipline.

“Honestly? Tired of being overlooked,” she said. “For years, I’ve watched the industry celebrate noise over consistency and hype over discipline. I’ve put in the work quietly, faithfully, and I realised something had to change if I wanted my story told properly.”

Pretty Play explained that the idea began as a personal turning point rather than a record attempt. “For me, this didn’t start with the idea of a record. It started with a quiet personal reckoning,” she said, noting that she had paused some dreams in the past due to fear and self-doubt.

She added that the attempt represents something bigger than endurance. “This isn’t even about proving I can DJ for 288 hours. It’s basically about proving resilience and possibility, especially as a woman in a male-dominated space who deserves a global spotlight,” she stated.

On why she chose 288 hours, Pretty Play said the number symbolises sacrifice. “The 288 hours represent endurance, discipline, and total commitment. It’s not a convenient number, and that’s exactly why it matters to me,” she said.

She also explained why Lagos was chosen as the location. “Lagos doesn’t coddle you. This city demands excellence or it ignores you,” she noted
