ABUJA – The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA) has expressed concern over rising political tension in Kano State as anti-corruption investigations by the state government continue, calling for calm, restraint and respect for due process.
The group made its position known in a statement signed by its Chairman, Maikano Danlami, in which it drew attention to public debate surrounding ongoing investigations being carried out under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“We have observed developments surrounding ongoing investigations being carried out by the Kano State Government, and we believe it is important that all such processes are allowed to proceed independently and transparently.
“We understand that a drug supply contract valued at N440 million is among the matters presently under review by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.
“Issues relating to public procurement deserve careful examination, as transparency and accountability remain essential to good governance.
“Reports concerning additional contracts, including one related to borehole water repairs, have heightened public interest in how public funds are managed, and this underscores the need for clear and open processes.
“We believe that clarification by public officials on such matters is important, and that all relevant facts should be established through appropriate institutions.”
Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and the rule of law. In a joint statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, and the Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the government said Governor Yusuf had directed the Executive Chairman of the PCACC to investigate the allegations.
According to the government, the directive was intended to strengthen public confidence and ensure that established procedures are followed.
KPRA, however, cautioned against allowing political disagreements to overshadow institutional responsibilities.
“At moments like this, all political actors are encouraged to place the integrity of public institutions above individual or partisan considerations.
“Our position is that due process must be respected at all times, and that investigations should be conducted without pressure, interference or prejudice.
“The responsibility for transparency in governance extends beyond government alone. Citizens, civil society groups and the media all have a role to play in promoting accountability.”
The group said it would continue to advocate for good governance and responsible public engagement, adding that strong institutions remain essential to Kano State’s democratic development.
