Olatunji Okuku: Honoured with the SWAN award

When Samuel Olatunji Okuku speaks about Nigerian football, his passion is unmistakable. Recently honoured by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) during its 60th-anniversary celebrations in Abuja, the recognition represents far more than a personal milestone. It is a tribute to decades of commitment to nurturing young talent and shaping the future of the game in Nigeria.

“I’m honored to have been recognized by SWAN, a body that has contributed immensely to Nigerian football for many years… for my contribution to Nigerian football over the years,” he wrote in a reflective post on social media after the ceremony.

For Okuku, however, the award is merely one marker on a journey that began far from the spotlight. Born in Erinmope-Ekiti, football was never just recreation; it was a calling. From street kickabouts to organised training sessions, he quickly learnt that talent was only the starting point. Character, discipline, and opportunity were equally crucial.

This philosophy later became the foundation of Tripple 44 Academy, which he co-founded with his longtime friends and collaborators, Eniola Mubarak and Samson Afolabi. “And to my two wonderful friends whom we have been on this journey together, @eniolarbb and Samson Afolabi… two of whom we have managed to build one of the most distinguished football academies in Nigeria together. And to all the boys that have worn the shirt of @Tripple_44 over the years,” he shared.

Tripple 44 Academy is more than a training ground. It is a carefully built ecosystem where young footballers are taught hard work, humility and teamwork alongside technical proficiency. Under Okuku’s guidance, the academy has provided pathways for countless players to move into professional football at home and abroad.

Yet Okuku’s vision reaches further. He is deeply invested in upholding the integrity of Nigerian football journalism and preserving its history. In his words: “In an era where people mistake content creating for journalism, these are some of the bravest people who write not just because it directly benefits or puts money in their pocket but because it’s the right thing to do. They do so because it’s for the greater good. They don’t always write to make a condo look like a mansion.”

This commitment to principle – doing the right thing even when unseen or uncelebrated – defines Okuku’s approach to both leadership and the game itself. Every training session, scouting trip and mentoring conversation is guided by his belief that the future of Nigerian football is a collective responsibility.

The SWAN award acknowledges his influence, but for Okuku the mission continues. “I pray history will continue to be kind to you and your generations. Many of you may not understand what you have done until you’re gone, but many of the things you write will outlive you. And posterity shall be kind to you and your generations. I hope you continue to find strength to contribute to our football. Thank you,” he wrote, extending his gratitude to those who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Samuel Olatunji Okuku’s story is not merely one of accolades; it is one of legacy. He represents a vision of football where success is measured not solely in trophies, but in lives shaped and futures transformed. For every young player who steps onto the pitch at Tripple 44, every coach inspired to act with integrity, and every journalist committed to truth, his work serves as a reminder: Nigerian football is larger than any single match. It remains a platform for hope, perseverance and the enduring potential of young people who dare to dream.
