Jos – The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council has assured the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 3 Division, Nigerian Army of its continued support to ensure the State is returned to the path of enduring peace.
The pledge was made on Thursday when the Chapel Executive paid a visit to the Headquarters of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba, Bassa LGA, to strengthen collaboration with the military in the State’s peace-building efforts.
The journalists were received by Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, who doubles as the Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) keeping the peace in the State.
The Chapel Chairman, Polycarp Auta, commended Major General Oyinlola’s efforts since his assumption of office, despite the complex security situation in the State, assured of a robust collaboration stressing that journalists are not just storytellers but critical stakeholders in Plateau’s peace process.
Apart from its members primary responsibility of daily reportage, Auta highlighted the efforts of the Chapel in carrying out corporate social responsibilities, sought a robust collaboration with both the 3 Division, and OPSH, and assured of using the media platforms to amplify truth and tranquillity in the State.
He also addressed concerns about some journalists misrepresenting security agencies, noting the dangers posed by fake news and sensationalized reporting in the age of new media.
“No society can thrive without safety and security,” he emphasized, adding that the Chapel would continue to prioritize sensitizing its members on patriotism, factual, and objective reporting, especially within conflict-sensitive environments.
Responding, Maj. Gen. Oyinlola welcomed the Chapel leadership, commended the recognition of the need for institutional collaboration for the common good, and described the media as a “critical bridge” between security agencies and the public.
“You hold the microphone; you shape the mindset. What you report can build or burn. Choose to build,” the GOC urged.
The Army Chief called for responsible journalism that balances sensitivity with truth, especially in times of crisis, and warned against unverified or sensational headlines that could inflame tensions.
“We earnestly seek your partnership in promoting narratives that unite rather than divide,” Oyinlola said, adding that Operation SAFE HAVEN remained committed to its mandate with an open-door policy for prompt incident verification.
He assured the Chapel that despite attempts to undermine military efforts, the Army would remain committed in securing lives and property across Plateau State and beyond.
“No society can thrive without peace, and accurate information is its foundation,” he emphasized.
