Historically: Remembering Adekunle Fajuyi

Today, June 26, we remember and celebrate the birth of a true Nigerian hero — Lt. Colonel Francis Adekunle Fajuyi, born on this day in 1926 in Ado-Ekiti.

Though it’s been nearly six decades since his tragic death, his legacy of courage, patriotism, and sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

Fajuyi began his journey as a teacher but soon answered the call to serve, joining the Nigerian Army in 1943. A trailblazer in many respects, he earned the prestigious Military Cross for gallantry during the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo — a rare honour among African soldiers at the time.

As Military Governor of the Western Region in 1966, he stood for justice and national unity at a time when Nigeria was deeply divided. On July 29, 1966, he made the ultimate sacrifice — choosing to die alongside the then Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, rather than betray his principles or abandon his guest.

Today, we remember him not just as a soldier, but as a symbol of loyalty and unity in the face of chaos.

As Nigeria continues to evolve, may the memory of Lt. Colonel Fajuyi remind us of what true service and sacrifice look like.

Happy posthumous birthday, hero. Your name remains etched in history.
