In a nation where musical innovation is as vibrant as its culture, Uwakwe Stanley Chibuzor, known to the world as Sosetup, is making waves by redefining the very essence of Afro-Rap. At just 21, this artist is not just creating music; he’s crafting a sonic tapestry that weaves together Afrobeat, rap, and soulful narratives, captivating listeners across Nigeria.
Sosetup’s approach to music is deeply personal and intuitive. “I vibe on the sound my spirit pushes me to,” he explains, revealing a creative process driven by pure emotion. This organic approach has resulted in a unique sound that seamlessly blends Afro, dancehall, reggae, highlife, pop, rap, drill, and R&B, showcasing a remarkable versatility that sets him apart.
Growing up in the quiet village of Kabusa, Abuja, after being born in Enugu, Sosetup’s early life was a balance of academics and entrepreneurial influence from his parents. However, his passion for music ignited early.
“I’ve always loved music,” he recalls, noting that he began writing songs at the age of 14. This early love for music laid the foundation for his current artistic journey.
The name “Sosetup” itself emerged from his debut studio track, “Setup,” marking a pivotal moment in his career. Now, with a staggering catalog of over 300 songs, Sosetup has fully embraced his musical calling, dedicating himself entirely to his craft. His music reflects a depth and confidence that effortlessly transitions between hard-hitting rap verses and melodic Afrobeats hooks.
Sosetup draws inspiration from Nigerian music legends like Phyno, Olamide, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, with Phyno being a particular favorite. “Phyno is my favorite, I’ve learned so much from his music, his vibe, and his authenticity,” he says. These influences are evident in his lyricism and delivery, yet Sosetup maintains a distinct voice that is both fresh and authentic.
His track “BADMAN KILLER” exemplifies his ability to revitalize older material. Written five years ago, the song was transformed when producer Portrexy added piano chords, elevating it into a powerful anthem. The track’s positive reception underscores Sosetup’s knack for connecting with audiences on a deeper level.
With his grassroots fanbase rapidly expanding, Sosetup’s organic growth is a testament to his authentic storytelling and dynamic flow. The anticipation for his upcoming project, “Dream Big,” featuring TB Square, is palpable, signaling a new chapter in his career. “There’s a lot of music coming soon,” he assures, “The industry should be prepared.”
Sosetup’s journey from the streets of Kabusa to the forefront of Nigeria’s music scene highlights his role as a genre-defying artist. He’s not just making music; he’s shaping the sound of a generation, proving that his artistic vision is as boundless as his talent.
