Late Chief Edwin Clark

Abuja, Nigeria – Elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has described the late Chief Edwin Clark as a firm, just, and truthful leader who remained committed to the unity of Nigeria throughout his lifetime.

Yakasai made these remarks during a condolence visit to the Abuja residence of the late Chief Clark in Asokoro, where he met with the bereaved family and members of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

Reflecting on their decades-long friendship, Yakasai in a statement signed by Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, PANDEF National Publicity Secretary recalled how their bond dated back to the 1960s when he served as the Commissioner for Information in Kano State under Governor Audu Bako, while Chief Clark held the position of Commissioner for Education in the Midwest State under Governor Samuel Ogbemudia.

He reminisced about how their paths frequently crossed, with Chief Clark often accompanying Governor Ogbemudia to Kano and, in return, Yakasai being hosted by Clark during visits to the Midwest. Their relationship further deepened when both men became prominent members of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). According to Yakasai, until Chief Clark’s passing, they regularly engaged in discussions on national unity, justice, and Nigeria’s development.

The 99-year-old statesman lamented the passing of Chief Clark, describing it as a personal loss and a significant blow to the Niger Delta region and Nigeria as a whole. “He was a rare Nigerian, and finding a replacement for him will be difficult,” he said.

PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, also spoke during the visit, recounting Chief Clark’s brief illness and his final words before passing: “I love Nigeria. Nigeria is my country.” Igali emphasized that while the loss is deeply felt, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Chief Clark.

He informed Alhaji Yakasai of the numerous dignitaries who had visited to pay their respects, including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, former President Goodluck Jonathan, delegations from the Sultan of Sokoto and the Obong of Calabar, among others.

Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary and former political adviser to Chief Clark, introduced members of the late statesman’s family and PANDEF leadership to Yakasai during the visit. Yakasai was accompanied by his wife.

The visit is one of many that have highlighted Chief Edwin Clark’s enduring influence as a champion of justice, national unity, and the Niger Delta cause.
