Creative expression platform, TikTok, has joined forces with the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA towards ensuring that vulnerable young social media users are protected from cyber predators.
The partnership also extended to Data Science Nigeria, DSN, who believes the campaign aligns perfectly with its mission to foster responsible use of technology.
The second phase of the #SaferTogether campaign launched in Lagos and Abuja focuses on empowering communities with critical digital literacy skills to protect the most vulnerable members of society, young digital users.
TikTok said: “The initiative, which debuted in 2022, has already impacted thousands, including over 1,500 parents and teachers, by providing them with practical insights into TikTok’s safety tools and promoting mental well-being in digital spaces.
“This year, the campaign expands its outreach and scope to address more pressing challenges in the digital landscape, including misinformation, cyberbullying, and online exploitation.
“The inclusion of NITDA as a key partner in Phase 2 amplifies the campaign’s impact by aligning with Nigeria’s broader goals of digital literacy and cybersecurity.” Also, NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, stated: “This partnership demonstrates our commitment to equipping Nigerians with the skills and tools needed to thrive in the digital age while safeguarding themselves against online threats.
“Together with TikTok and DSN, we are paving the way for a more secure and inclusive digital environment.”
This phase of the campaign extends its geographic reach to include Edo and Kaduna States, engaging a wide spectrum of stakeholders, from educators and parents to policymakers and community leaders. Workshops will cover essential topics such as digital citizenship, child safety online, and combating fake news, reinforcing the collective responsibility of creating a safer digital ecosystem.
In the view of TikTok’s Government Relations and Public Policy Director for Africa, Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, “Digital literacy is a cornerstone of a safe and vibrant online community.
“By empowering those who guide and protect young users, parents, teachers, and guardians, we ensure not only the safety of our platform but the integrity of the digital environment at large.”
CEO of DSN, Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, remarked, “We are excited to extend the reach of #SaferTogether. This campaign aligns perfectly with our mission to foster responsible use of technology. By equipping key stakeholders with knowledge, we can collectively create a safer, more informed society.”
In addition to workshops and direct engagements, TikTok offers comprehensive online resources, including its Safety Centre and Guardian’s Guide. These platforms provide accessible, up-to-date information on managing digital safety, ensuring the lessons learned during #SaferTogether extends far beyond the classroom.
