ABUJA – Temi Nurudeen Salam, Esq., Executive Director of the Initiative for Positive Growth and Collective Development (IPAD), has condemned the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its response to Senator Oyelola Ashiru’s criticism, describing it as a reckless attack on legislative immunity.

The controversy began when Senator Ashiru labelled the NDLEA as “corrupt and compromised” during a Senate plenary on establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Salam argued that the NDLEA’s response violated Senator Ashiru’s legislative immunity, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The lawyer emphasized that the agency’s actions undermined the separation of powers and threatened democratic institutions.

Salam also criticized the NDLEA for failing to address allegations of corruption within its ranks.

He expressed concerns that the NDLEA’s actions might deter lawmakers from performing their oversight functions due to fear of retaliation from agencies.

He stated, “The NDLEA’s counterattack against Senator Lola Isah Ashiru is primitive and a violation of the senator’s immunity in the course of legislative duties.

“Although it is undeniable that the current leadership of the NDLEA is doing its best in combating drugs and substance abuse in Nigeria, there are bad elements within the agency.

“Regrettably, the senator’s statement reflects the current reality of the NDLEA. Instead of addressing these issues, the NDLEA’s harsh response shows gross disrespect for the Constitution.

“The agency should take a more constructive approach, examining the broader issues rather than focusing on individual criticism.

“If the Senator is found culpable, the agency, as a legal institution, should not hesitate to prosecute him according to the law.

“Moreover, criticism should be welcomed: even a convicted drug offender can legitimately critique the agency’s activities. The agency should introspect and address the issues raised.

“The prevalence of drug and substance abuse calls for a more reformative approach, such as establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.

“Going forward, we urge the agency to stay focused on its goals and embrace criticism as a catalyst for achieving a healthier nation.”
