Tranfer debacle: Which way Victor Osimhen?

Tranfer debacle: Which way Victor Osimhen?

Osimhen

In modern football, emerging talent often comes with a significant cost. For instance, Leicester City’s 2016 golden team saw many of its key players depart within a few years. Similarly, Monaco in 2017 and Ajax in 2019 sold nearly all their stars following their standout seasons.

Victor Osimhen, who led Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2023, was expected to face a similar fate. A year later, it appears Osimhen is caught in a transfer dilemma.

Osimhen has been in the news since the summer window opened. From England to Spain to the Middle East, the Nigerian international has drawn attraction. However, none of these moves appear to be coming into fruition.

With Chelsea?

A high-profile player known for his sharp eye for goal, Osimhen’s potential transfer is currently hampered by the difficulty of negotiating with his Italian club. When Chelsea expressed interest, the Italian side demanded a release clause of at least €100 million.

Given Chelsea’s financial constraints and squad considerations, they preferred a loan deal, whereas Osimhen seeks a permanent transfer. The move could gain momentum if Romelu Lukaku makes a switch to another club.

Arsenal?

Arsenal are in dire need of a striker and have reportedly reached out to the former Lille man. It all seemed as if Osimhen was headed to Arsenal back in April before Chelsea came into the picture.

Again, SSC Napoli was not ready to lower their price as Arsenal considered Osimhen’s wages, too.

PSG?

On paper, Paris Saint-Germain is the only club capable of meeting both Osimhen’s transfer fee and his substantial wages. Reports suggest that PSG may intensify their efforts to sign Osimhen following Gonçalo Ramos’ injury on matchday 1.

However, several reports from the French capital are saying that PSG has no intention of signing Osimhen. Veteran sports journalist Fabrizio Romano recently announced that PSG’s bid for Osimhen is false and untrue.

Or Saudi Arabia?

As the final days of the transfer window edge closer, there are reports that Osimhen might complete a move to the Middle East. Although the Asian clubs have been silent this time around, they are capable of wooing Osimhen with a juicy offer, but it is very unlikely that the 25-year-old will accept a £70 million offer from Al-Hilal, a club that is lurking to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford.

Which way now?

There are lots of things that Victor Osimhen’s agent needs to prove to show. Apart from what he recently asserted that Victor Osimhen is a top player, we can be certain that Osimhen will stay in Europe.

“Victor still has so much to do in Europe. There is a need for respect and balance.

“He made history, and when there were major offers (also this year), we always accepted the club’s decisions. As I said, he is not a package to be shipped far away to make room for new prophets,” he added.

Only time will tell.
