Lagos – Two brothers, Ismail Raheem and Ganiu Raheem, who allegedly burgled a shop and stole items worth N2.7 million, on Thursday, appeared at a Surulere Chief Magistrates Court, Lagos.

The accused: Ismail, 39 and Ganiu, 43, who both reside at Block 1 Alapa Fujah, Surulere, are facing a three-count-charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, the accused committed the offences with some other persons still at large on July 3, at their residence.

He said the accused burgled the store belonging to the late Omotunde Alugo.

“The brothers and their accomplices stole four deep freezers, two fridges, one industrial machine, a T.V set, two electric ovens and one sewing machine, all valued N2.7 million,” he said.

Okoliko said the accused were caught by some neighbours, who saw them moving the items out of the store.

The offences contravene Sections 287, 309 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 309 prescribes a seven-year jail term for burglary, while Section 287 stipulates a three-year-term for stealing.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Magistrate Bola Folarin-williams, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties should be the blood relations of the accused and should hold managerial posts.

In addition, the sureties should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Oct. 9 for mention. (NAN)
