Alfa made the plea while speaking in Lagos.

He expressed concern that visual artists were relegated in the country adding that `this aspect of art is a money spinner for the nation.’

He appealed to the Federal Government to create an enabling process for the procurement of soft loans with minimal interest rate for artists to produce their works in bulk and exhibit in other countries.

Alfa said that in spite the fact that he carved the historic Bronze mask being commemorated, he has been living in penury.

“I have not been paid since I was commissioned to carve the Queen Idia, Ivory mask, adopted as the emblem for Festac `77.

“Im so glad am alive today to witness the commemoration of FESTAC’77 @ 40 celebration, I was 28 years then and now 68.

“I carved the FESTAC’77 mask then and because the mask was carted away by the Europeans, I was consulted to carve another one for the commemoration.

“I want the Federal Government to give us, artists, soft loans to produce and showcase our works in the country here and other countries of the world.

“Artist are not respected in the society, they suffer a lot; for over 10 years now, I have not been able to complete my personal house because I cannot afford it.

“Government need to come to our aid, make our voices heard, promote our works and government will benefit greatly,” Alufa said.
