Ijaw must speak in one voice-Gov Dickson

…urges feuding INC factions to embrace peace

By Samuel Oyadongha

YENAGO:  GOVERNOR Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has reaffirmed his position that no self-seeking interest would be allowed to destroy the legacies of the founding fathers of the Ijaw National Congress, (INC),  the apex pan Ijaw socio-cultural organisation.

Dickson in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Francis Agbo stated this during a consultative meeting he convened in Yenagoa, to seek lasting resolutions to what he described as ‘family disagreement’ within the Congress.

The governor, who explained that the meeting was convened to seek the way forward for the Ijaw nation, called for mutual respect and understanding for one another towards promoting  the unity and the aspirations of the Ijaw nation.

He called on the feuding factions to sheathe their swords and work together with other patriotic forces to advance the Ijaw cause.

Dickson, who emphasized the need for Ijaw sons and daughters to speak in one voice against oppression and other challenges confronting the Ijaw nation, stressed that, the Congress remains a critical organization of the Ijaw nation, which interest supersedes any individual ambition.

He warned against the politicization of the body, emphasizing that, the future of the Ijaw nation could be better protected, if members work with unity of purpose and oneness.

“Even when we disagree, we must, we must do so in the overrall interest of our people. Whether we agree or disagree, it should be in such a way that will advance our common good.

“The Ijaw nation is bigger than any one of us. We will, therefore, not allow anybody’s parochial ego to destroy an organization of our fore-fathers put together over the years.

“We have a lot of challenges now. Our people are pursued left, right and centre everywhere. It is only when we work together that we can protect our future,‎” he said.
