Alleged abuse of office: PSC probes CPs

By Joseph Erunke

ABUJA—THE Police Service Commission, PSC, said, yesterday, it has begun investigation against some Commissioners of Police holding state command appointments.

The development came against the backdrop of recent official complaints and petitions of alleged abuse of office received against them.

A statement released by Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations of the commission, said Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Musa Istifanus, disclosed this,  yesterday, in Abuja, while receiving the leadership of a group under the aegis of Concerned citizens of Edo State.

The group had stormed the commission to protest against what they called “continued underwhelming performance of the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr. Haliru Gwandu.

Istifanus said the commission had since received several complaints and petitions against some Commissioners of Police for allegedly going against laid down rules and regulations.

He noted that the commission would take serious action against any of the CPs found to have compromised his office.

“The commission takes very seriously issues of abuse of office especially from state CPs, which he said could lead to anarchy, stressing that the complaint from the Edo group will be expeditiously handled.

Earlier, the leader of the group, Henry Okpeme, had complained of the collapse of security in Edo State, mentioning the alarming increase in high profile assassinations, kidnapping and rape.

He observed that the present CP appeared to have been overwhelmed or compromised and should be redeployed in the interest of the people of Edo State.
