Talk about the creative craft of beat making, the name, Puffy Tee will surely spring up in the minds of anyone familiar with Olu Maintain’s hit song, Yahoozee, and others, during his hay days as a hit-maker. Apparently, the talented music producer, Puffy Tee, has not been very visible as he was but he has been working underground and smiling to the bank. When Showtime recently ran into him, he made a rather disturbing revelation. According to Puffy Tee, artistes no longer take time to write their songs without the help of music producers. He insinuated that artistes have become so lazy that they depend on artistes to write their songs.
“A lot of artistes just want an easy way out, they want easy stuff, and because the Nigerian audience as a whole sometimes can’t be predicted, you can’t predict what they would like. Now, artistes are dependent on producers’ efforts to write their songs. When a producer makes a beat the artiste gets inspiration from there and I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Sometimes, songs are done the way the artiste feels; the way it comes from their mind and the way they get the inspiration. Gone are the days when people sing songs that talk about culture, attitude, how to treat ourselves or love ourselves, respect ourselves and do the right things, work hard and all that. I write good songs with good lyrics but I’ve to look for something catchy, something commercial as they call it”, he said.
