PORT HARCOURT— National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers of Nigeria, NUPENG,  has called out its members in Rivers State on an indefinite strike to protest the deplorable state of the Eleme portion of the East-West Road.

National Industrial Relations Officer of the body, Mr Bassey Harry, disclosed this to newsmen, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, saying that the state and federal governments had left the road in its deplorable state.

He said it was resolved that all depots and tanker drivers should key into the strike action.

He said that the portion of East-West Road between Eleme and Onne was so bad that it was now a death trap to members.

It will be recalled that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, when he assumed office, went into  collaboration with some companies operating in the area to raise about N3 billion naira to fix that portion of the road.

The companies that reportedly went into the memorandum of understanding with the state government  were Integrated Logistics Limited, Indorama Petrochemical, West African Container Terminals, Port Harcourt Refining Company, Nigerian Ports Authority and Oil and Gas Free Zone.

It could not be confirmed if all the parties paid their shares of the money. But work resumed on the road.
