The UOO Nigeria Plc story

The UOO Nigeria Plc story

By Osa Mbonu-Amadi

U.O.O. Nigeria Plc traces its origins to 1956, when Nzedioramma Uche Okafor established a trading enterprise after years of trading in textiles, palm oil and groceries with several apprentices and partners. Following the formal absorption of his longtime assistants into the business, he formed U.O.O. Trading Company. The business expanded rapidly, opening branches in Lagos, Ibadan, Onitsha, Aba and Port Harcourt. In 1975 the company was incorporated as a limited liability company and, following continued growth and a shareholder base exceeding 50, it converted to a public limited company in 2001 under the name UOO Nigeria Plc.

Diversification and industrial footprint

From 1980 the group diversified beyond trading into manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, downstream oil and gas marketing, and real estate. Manufacturing operations included production of galvanized roofing sheets, arc welding electrodes, UPVC pipes and construction nails. The agricultural division developed one of the region’s largest poultry farms with an integrated feed mill. The real estate arm grew a national property portfolio with commercial and residential holdings across Abia, Abuja, Anambra, Lagos and Rivers State.

At its peak prior to 2004, the group achieved annual turnover of about two billion naira. Subsequent years brought setbacks driven largely by inconsistent government policy and infrastructure decline where some operations were based. The board has stated that revival plans for affected operations will proceed once essential infrastructure is restored.

Current strategic focus

Today UOO Nigeria Plc concentrates on divisional businesses where it holds clear comparative advantages, notably agriculture and real estate. The company is planning a major commercial estate development in Abia State in partnership with stakeholders. Alongside project development, management continues organizational restructuring to strengthen governance, operational efficiency and capacity for sustained growth.

Capital structure, governance and management

UOO’s current share capital stands at 980 million ordinary shares of 50 kobo each. The company has resumed consistent dividend payments to shareholders since 2020, and the Board views a stock exchange listing as a strategic objective to be pursued at the appropriate time.

The company’s registered head office is No. 13 Ademola Street, off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. Its board comprises two Executive Directors, three Non‑Executive Directors and a Company Secretary/Legal Adviser. The senior management team includes two Executive Directors, a Group General Manager, an Assistant General Manager, Controller of Finance and Administration, managers for assets & investment and accounts, a Human Resources Manager, a Regional Manager and a Group Project Manager.

Corporate administration and compliance

PAC Registrars Limited serves as the company registrar and supervises the Annual General Meeting alongside observers from the Corporate Affairs Commission. External audit is performed by Oludare Okusanya & Co (Chartered Accountants) and statutory filings are completed annually.

Founder’s life and legacy

Chief Nzedioramma Uche Okafor, known as Onyima Dike N’ututu, was born in 1917 in Nkwukwo, Unubi (Nnewi South, Anambra State). He began commerce with modest capital and grew his business through resilience, enterprise and an ability to mobilize people and resources. Largely self‑educated, he became a prominent industrialist and philanthropist committed to community development and education. He sponsored local schools and contributed to health, infrastructure and civic projects in his native Unubi and beyond.

A community leader and advocate for tradition and education, Onyima supported cultural institutions, played a role in promoting the Igbo language, and backed numerous civic initiatives—from road building and market development to health‑care facilities and disaster relief. He avoided partisan politics while supporting government projects that delivered public benefit, including donations to airport infrastructure and local development schemes.

Onyima’s values—honesty, integrity, hard work and charity—shaped UOO’s corporate culture and community engagement. He led the company and community initiatives until his death on 30 January 2007. His family and the company continue to honor his vision, maintaining UOO’s commitments to employment, social investment and national development.

UOO Nigeria Plc positions itself as a legacy group evolving for the future. UOO Nigeria Plc remains dedicated to sustaining an upward growth trajectory, adding lasting value to stakeholders, and contributing meaningfully to societal progress.
