Declare emergency on rampaging herdsmen, monarch urges Okowa

By Emma Amaize & Ochuko Akuopha

ASABA—FORMER national chairman of Traditional Rulers of Oil Minerals Producing Communities of Nigeria, TROMPCON and paramount ruler of Seimbiri Kingdom, Delta State, HRM Pere Charles Ayemi-Botu, yesterday, called on Delta State Government to declare a state of emergency over the killings and attacks by herdsmen in the state.

The monarch, in an interview with Vanguard, said: “Delta State Government should command the killer-herdsmen, who carry out robbery operations, kidnap citizens and rape innocent women to vacate the state immediately or face its wrath.

GOVERNOR Ifeanyi Okowa

“A few days ago, five farmers were killed at Ossissa community in the state by herdsmen, who also abducted a monarch within Ossissa, Ndokwa, on December 21, 2016, on his way to Asaba to attend the Delta State Traditional Council Rulers meeting, but was however, rescued. However, the Obi of Ubuluuku Kingdom kidnapped early last year, was murdered by other killer-herdsmen, who have been on the rampage in the bushes of Delta State with impunity because they believe that they are above the law.

“They operate as if nobody can arrest them and several innocent lives have been taken by them on Ohoror-Bomadi Road in the past and lately. They have also descended on Abraka, Ethiope-East Local Government Area of the state.

“Government seems to be wasting time on the matter. It should direct the Police and Joint Task Force, JTF, to come to those areas where the herdsmen have forcefully taken over from the rightful owners and flush them out to allow the farmers return to their farms, else this canker-worm will soon overrun the entire country and there will ensue a bitter tribal war capable of tearing the country apart.”

Similarly,   Niger Delta activist and chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, Chief Fred Obe, has urged the Federal Government to order security agencies to disarm ravaging herdsmen posing a threat to lives and property in all parts of the country.

Speaking with Vanguard on telephone, Obe said: “On the issue of security, the Federal Government has made worthwhile efforts, but again there is room for improvement to really help secure optimally, the Nigerian environment because security goes beyond the fight against Boko Haram.

I give kudos to President Buhari for curtailing the menace of rampaging Boko Haram insurgents, but he will give full confidence to Nigerians on his good intentions for the country if urgent steps are taken to curtail the rampaging menace of herdsmen nationwide.”

“The Federal Government should extend the whistle blowing policy to criminal areas like kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of illegal fire arms. If the government promises to pay certain amount of money to anyone that has information on these in this hard time, I think criminality will be reduced geometrically to the happiness of Nigerians.”

“Since the inception of the President Muhammadu Buhari government, two years ago, they (herdsmen) have turned out to become invading Jihadists and an occupying force of the pre-colonial era that his worse than Boko Haram. Unfortunately, Mr. President has feigned ignorance with utter disdain and apparently turned deaf ears, as  the Inspector General of Police could order their arrest and prosecution for illegal possession of dangerous firearms, while the Chief of Army Staff    has not ordered Operation Lafia Dole, Desert Storm or Crocodile Smile to flush out the invading armed herdsmen,” he said.
