PORT HAR-COURT—THE Nigerian Army has sentenced a soldier, Private Suleiman Olamilekan, to 28 days imprisonment for molesting a  civilian, Miss Ebere  Ohakwe, at a checkpoint in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.

Col. Aminu Ilyasu, spokesman of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, in Port Harcourt,  said the soldier would also forfeit his salary for 28 days to the Federal Government, stressing that there was no room for acts of indiscipline in the Army.

Urging the general public not to hesitate to bring to the notice of the Division any act of misconduct by soldiers anywhere in  Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom states, Col Ilyasu said the Army had however, put measures in place to avoid repeat of such ugly conduct.

He said the General Officer Commanding the Division, Major General  Enobong Udoh, immediately ordered an investigation into the incident when it got to the notice of the Division that a soldier maltreated the lady, Miss Ohakwe at a checkpoint.

He said the Army will continue to maintain its dignity as a disciplined body with utmost respect for justice and fairness.

“The 6 Division, Nigerian Army, has charged, tried and found Private Suleiman Olamilekan of 6 Division Garrison, Port Harcourt, guilty of the maltreatment of Miss  Ohakwe.  He  was accordingly   sentenced  to 28 days imprisonment   with hard labour and   the   forfeiture   of   his salary   for   same   number   of  days   to  the   Federal Government  of Nigeria.

“It will be recalled that there was a report in the social media that the soldier maltreated one Miss Ohakwe at Omagwa checkpoint on January 30, 2017,” he said.
