Man seeks divorce over wife’s addiction to beer parlour

A 49-year-old man, Abiodun Sokoya, has pleaded with an Ikorodu customary court in Lagos State to dissolve his 19-year-old marriage over wife’s regular visits to a public bar.

Sokoya, an engineer, told the court, yesterday, that he was no longer interested in the marriage, which had produced four children.

The husband, who lives at Rofo Estate in Odongunyan area of Ikorodu, described his wife as a drunk and a trouble maker.

He told the court: “My wife visits her friends at a public bar (beer parlour) and drinks alcohol. I warned her against moving with such friends, but she did not heed my warning.”

According to him, the wife also attends night parties and relates with women who have no husbands, adding that “her stubbornness pushed me into marrying a second wife. She does not bother to check her children in their schools during visiting days; please separate us, I can no longer live with her.”

His wife, Olabisi, who was crying, however, denied the allegations and urged the court to save her marriage.

The Court’s President, Mrs Omolara Abiola, scolded the woman and advised her to change her ways.

She also asked the couple to keep the peace, pending the outcome of the court’s proceedings. The case was adjourned to March 9 for a possible reconciliation.
