Fight against corruption: Maharaji stresses need for removal of immunity clause

Founder of One Love Family, Satguru Maharaji, has said unless the immunity clause is removed from the 1999 Constitution, the war against corruption by the present administration would be a mirage.

Marahaji, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to begin the move for the removal of the immunity clause to save the nation’s democracy from failing, saying it only serves the interest of the political class.

He gave the warning in a letter addressed to the President titled,

“Immunity for political leaders not in good faith”, and copied to all past Nigerian leaders.

According to him, Nigerian leaders have continued to abuse the clause by looting the nation’s treasury and use such illegal wealth to buy justice after leaving office.

He said, “Trillions of Naira have been looted and wasted by our political leaders since the re-birth of democracy in Nigeria in 1999. While in office, some political leaders at all levels of governance help themselves with public funds and are shielded by Section 308 from prosecution, no matter how obvious or colossal their looting spree may be.

“I earnestly call on President Buhari to push for the removal of Section 308 from our constitution in order to enhance the effectiveness of his anti-corruption drive”.
