At least N56 million has been recovered in eight months from ghost workers, dead and retirees of Local Government and Local Education Authorities in the state. This was contained in the quarterly publications made available by the Quarterly Town hall meeting planning committee set up by the State Government; chaired by Permanent Secretary for the Office of Chief of Staff, Mr. Bamgboye. A. the document states the activities of the government ministries and agencies.
According to the documents, the funds were recovered through the Office of the Auditor-General for Local Governments, as salaries paid to retirees and dead workers at the various Local Governments and Local Government Education Authorities after their terminal dates. The state government stated that the funds were recovered between May and September, 2015 and January and March, 2016.
While N31 million was recovered from illegal salaries paid to staff and retirees of Local Government and Local Education Authorities in the state between May and September, 2015, N25 million was recovered between January and March, 2016.
A breakdown of the funds between May and September, 2015 showed that N814, 221 was recovered in the month of May, N92, 300 in June and N1.930, 782.26 in July. Other months were: N27, 386, 100; August while in September, N857, 347.81 was recovered from the illegal salaries paid to staff and retirees in the state.
The report said in January, 2016, about N4.649 million being paid to retirees and deceased LG staffs were recovered, while in February 2016, N3.594 million was recovered. In March 2016 alone, N16.960 million were recovered from retired ghost workers and deceased workers.
The government noted that the fund was discovered through the continuous review and certification of Local government and local education authorities’ payroll.
Meanwhile, the report said that there was the re-certification of 140 names of staff of various Local Government and Local Government Education Authorities deleted due to wrong dates of appointment and birth for reinstatement on payroll.
