Ondo Assembly backtracks on Speaker’s impeachment

Akure—MEMBERS of  the Ondo State House of Assembly, yesterday, rescinded their decision to impeach the first female Speaker in the history of the state Hon Jumoke Akindele and other principal officers less than 24 hours after serving them notice of impeachment.

Eighteen of the 26 members of the assembly at about 10pm on Tuesday met at the residence of one of them and resolved to sack the Speaker, the deputy  Hon Fatai Olotu and all the principal Officers

Security was beefed up at the assembly complex  yesterday as additional policemen and an Armored Personnel Carrier APC were deployed there by the state Police authorities.

After an over five hours meeting with the state governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko to resolve the uprising in the house, the members soft -peddled.

The fence mending meeting started on tuesday after the governor returned from Abuja and it dragged into yesterday.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting  which was attended by members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the members resolved to allow the status -quo on their leadership to remain.

The Chairman House Committee on Information, Hon. Olamide George told newsmen in Akure that they have reviewed their situation and decided to make a U-turn.

George in a statement read said that  “ On Tuesday, 8th of March, 2016, a sizeable number of Ondo state house of Assembly met on some burning issues touching on the leadership of the house.

“ Before plenary, Wednesday, 9th March, 2016, members at a larger and official gathering met to review the situation  and ;

“ Consequently resolved to allow the status quo ante on the leadership of the Ondo State House of Assembly as at 7th March 2016  to remain.

“ The house of Assembly remains united, cohesive and alive to its Constitutional responsibilities.

“ The issue of leadership of the house is an internal affairs and has been treated as such.
