Engineer commits to Nigeria’s digital broadcasting future

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) has welcomed back one of its engineers, Suleiman Saka, following his completion of a postgraduate degree in the United Kingdom, at a time when the country’s broadcast sector is navigating the technical demands of digital migration.

Saka, now an engineer (transmission/IT) with the NTA, recently earned a Master of Science degree in Computer Network Security with Distinction from the University of Greenwich, London. His return coincides with Nigeria’s ongoing transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, a shift that has introduced new network and cybersecurity challenges for broadcast institutions.

His postgraduate studies were funded through the National Information Technology Development Fund (NITDEF) scholarship, a highly competitive programme administered by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The scheme selects only a small number of candidates nationwide each year and covers tuition, travel and living expenses.

Each year, NITDEF selects only two candidates per state through a multi-stage evaluation process. That includes aptitude testing and panel interviews.

NTA granted Saka study leave for the programme despite his probationary status at the time, a decision that reflected confidence in his technical potential. Upon his return, the organisation promoted him from Engineer II to Engineer I, assigning him responsibilities linked to securing digital broadcast infrastructure.

At the University of Greenwich, Saka’s research focused on cost-effective approaches to securing networked systems in resource-constrained environments. His thesis examined how legacy security protocols could be adapted using affordable hardware platforms, with findings indicating that properly configured low-cost systems could demonstrate resilience comparable to more expensive enterprise setups.

Before his postgraduate training, Saka had also received the Total EPNL National Merit Scholarship during his undergraduate studies at the Federal University of Technology, Yola, marking a pattern of national academic recognition. Education analysts note that such consecutive competitive awards often point to sustained academic performance and long-term professional potential in technical fields.

Nigeria’s digital broadcasting transition, mandated by international telecommunications standards, has significant implications for the NTA, which operates the largest terrestrial television network in Africa. Unlike analogue systems, digital broadcasting relies heavily on networked infrastructure, increasing exposure to cybersecurity risks such as signal interference and unauthorised access.

Officials familiar with the transition say engineers trained in network security and systems integration are increasingly critical as legacy systems are integrated with modern digital platforms. Saka’s role involves supporting secure network architecture and maintaining operational reliability across the NTA’s expanding digital infrastructure.
