A driver with Chisco Transport, who was arrested by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, yesterday, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway during its special patrol operation, has vowed never to assist victims attacked by robbers again.
The driver, ThankGod Opetu, who left Abuja for Lagos, on a night journey, claimed he picked 12 passengers whose vehicles were attacked by robbers at Okene, Kogi State.
Trouble, however, started after he was accosted by personnel of FRSC, who were on a special patrol operation code named Operation Scorpion, along Lagos-Ibandan Express-way.
The personnel discovered that the number of passengers in the bus was more than those on the manifest.
The driver’s explanation that some of the passengers were those assisted at the robbery scene fell on deaf ears as the personnel insisted that the vehicle be impounded and the driver prosecuted.
A vexed Opetu said: “Is it a crime to assist fellow Nigerians at a robbery scene? I have been driving for 31 years and have embarked on several night journeys without experiencing this kind of thing.
“I will never help any stranded victim again. Robbers attacked one of our buses at Okene. I helped the stranded passengers only to be arrested for performing my civic responsibility to fellow Nigerians.”
