MAKURDI—Unknown armed men in the early hours of Saturday, shot and killed the immediate past Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, Mr. Lumunga Zegeguve.
Vanguard learned from a close family source (name withheld) that Zegeguve was killed at about 5am in his village, Tse Zegeguve, at Tiir council ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.
A source said: “The information we got was that about five well-armed men stormed his private home at Tse Zegeguve village at about 5am on Saturday.
“They gained entrance into his house and held everyone in the house hostage until they located their target, who they shot several times on the chest after which his entire house was ransacked by the invaders who, thereafter, fled the scene.”
Contacted, state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent of Police Austin Ezeani, who confirmed the killing, told reporters that three empty shells of AK-47 rifles were recovered by the police at the scene of the incident.
He said the police were on the trail of members of the gang, adding that a relation of the deceased (names withheld) had been arrested.
It was gathered that the body of the late PDP stalwart had since been deposited at Katsina-Ala General Hospital morgue by the police.
Vanguard recalls that Katsina-Ala Local Government has recorded several incidents of armed attacks on residents by unidentified gunmen.
Only recently, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Baba Ibrahim, on a special mission from the Force Headquarters to investigate cases of cattle rustling and kidnaps in the area, was gunned down by unidentified gunmen.
