ILORIN—Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State yesterday inaugurated a 14-member committee on the creation of local government council development areas in the state noting that the decision was taken to bring government closer to the people.

Currently there are 16 local governments in the state created in 1976 but another attempt by the administration of Alhaji Muhammed Lawal to create additional local governments was not successful as they were cancelled by the succeeding administration of Dr Bukola Saraki.

The committee’s terms of reference for the  eight weeks assignment according to the governor include: to”identify all basic parameters contigent to the creation of local government council development areas using variables peculiar to the Kwara environment while borrowing relevant experiences from other states that have similar structures.”

The committee was also asked to consider all other ‘’factors related to viability and identify suitable communities as headquarters and consider other relevant factors that will ensure uniformity, equity, fairness and greater sense of belonging”

Former acting National Chairman of PDP and now a chieftain of APC, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje is the chairman of the committee.

Inauguratig the committee at the council chambers of the Government House, Ahmed said explained that the creation of additional local government council areas became necessary because,”as presently constituted, the local government structure remains largely inadequate considering our population, land mass and other demographic features.’’
