The Medical Women Association of Nigeria, MWAN, has called on all tiers of government to embark on prompt and targeted education and enlightenment of all Nigerians to reduce misconceptions about the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.
The call was contained in a communique issued in Abuja after the third National Executive Committee meeting of the 2013-2015 Biennium of MWAN which held in Owerri, Imo State.
The communique, signed by MWAN National President, Dr Valerie Obot and the National Secretary, Dr Glory Essien said that education and enlightenment on EVD would enable the “dissemination of agreed upon channels of management for suspected cases’’.
MWAN listed the targets of the enlightenment programs to include community establishments, markets, places of worship as well as students and staff of primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
It also called for the “prompt dissemination and implementation of national protocols and Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare institutions as it concerns contact tracking, criteria for observation and quarantine as well as procedure for releasing those confirmed negative.
MWAN said that there should be active 24 hour telephone hotlines for all 36 states and FCT to “respond to questions, correct misconceptions, telephone triage for suspected cases as well as assist in co-ordination for observation, quarantine and management cases’’.
