UGHELLI—COORDINATOR of Citizens’ Rights Advocacy Network, CRAN, Mr. Peter Igbru, has described the ongoing demolition of structures in Warri and its environs by the Delta State Government as cruel, saying that the action had plunged helpless, and impoverished Deltans into further hardship.
Igbru, in a statement, yesterday, said that there would not have been any cause for alarm if the demolition exercise was limited to structures that truly obstruct traffic, free flow of drainages and constitute environmental hazards.
“The proliferation of temporary structures in the streets is an inevitable characteristic of a very poor and slow developing country like Nigeria, where people manage to eke out a living. It is sickening to see someone whose only means of livelihood is destroyed not by natural disaster, but by someone who should be protecting same. Why plunge your people into misery in the name of beautification?
“Has government considered what will become of those whose only means of livelihood have been destroyed?”
