Fashola lauds school children in combating climate change

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has commended school children in the state for their commitment towards combating climate change in the country.

Fashola who gave the commendation in a keynote address at the sixth anniversary of climate change clubs in Lagos State schools, noted that the seed of sustainable change planted in 2008 has yielded bountiful harvests.

“As the state government celebrates the sixth anniversary of the climate change clubs, an event which was put in place, to nurture the seed of change planted towards behavioural change and inculcation of ideal environmental lifestyle in our homes, schools and among entire Lagos residents, I am happy to state that it has continued to increase awareness on the issue of climate change,” he said.

Fashola, who disclosed that the result of the various exchange programmes and performances at international competitions has reaffirmed his belief in the ability of the children to make a change, added that this has encouraged the state government to do more in its collective desire to attain a sustainable environment and bequeath a future for incoming generation.

Acknowledging that Lagos State is indeed vulnerable to the effects of global warming, he explained that the establishment of the climate change clubs in schools in the state was part of the government’s strategic and complementary efforts to correct the mistakes of the past and make a sustainable choice and decision for the future.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr.Tunji Bello, was elated that the little mustard seed sowed six years ago, has transformed into a big oak tree that will not only influences the lives of people but also serve as a principal vehicle of transformation to positive influence people’s behaviour and habits.
