Jonathan and Obasanjo

ABUJA—The Governing Council of National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, will today hold an emergency meeting to perfect strategies on how to commence investigation into the allegation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan, was training snipers and had placed 1000 political opponents on his watch list.
Investigations by Vanguard yesterday further revealed that the commission will at the meeting today conclude on whether or not it would summon ex-President Obasanjo to personally appear before its probe panel to defend the content of his controversial 18-paged open letter to President Jonathan, dated December 2, 2013.
A source at the NHRC, who spoke to Vanguard on ground of anonymity, said it was normal investigative procedure of the commission to first decide on whether to invite anybody directly involved in a petition to appear in person or through a lawyer.
The source said: “This has always been our standard procedure. Like in the case of Governor Rotimi Ameachi, we invited him to appear before the commission and he did, likewise the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. At times, members of the probe panel may decide to visit the ‘locus delicti’ which is the place an offense took place, just like we did in the case between Governor Sullivan Chime and his wife.
“Sometimes, the council may decide to combine the two investigative patterns, just like we recently did on the case of Apo shootings. Before decision on the investigative strategy to adopt is reached, members of the council usually meet to arrive at a consensus.”
