Multi-talented Mercedes Benz GLA sets standards in compact SUV segment

The Mercedes Benz GLA compact sport utility vehicle was one of the star attractions at the just concluded International Motor Show, IAA, in Frankfurt, where it celebrated its world premiere. The all-new Mercedes Benz GLA class brings to five the number of premium sport utility vehicles in the Mercedes Benz passenger car line-up. The others include the GLK, GL, ML and G-Class.

According to the German auto maker, “the new GLA rounds off the extensive SUV portfolio of Mercedes Benz. With five models series, the company offers the widest range of any European premium manufacturer and meets all the individual mobility wishes of customers. At the same time, the LGA-class is the fourth of the five new compact models from Mercedes Benz.”

There is no doubt that this all-new compact SUV meant so much to the German auto maker going by comments by the company’s topshots.

According to Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, “with the compact GLA, we add a fifth attractive SUV variant to the Mercedes Benz model portfolio in this constantly, growing segment. The GLA impresses mainly with its progressive character and agile handling.”

Continuing, he said, “So I am very confident that the GLA with its fascinating design and everyday practicality will fill many new customers with enthusiasm for the Mercedes Benz brand.

As an entirely new class in the Mercedes Benz SUV segment, the all new compact reflects Mercedes Benz attention to the details in the premium class. It is loaded with high-end features like other big Mercedes Benz SUVs.

“The GLA can be driven with a fuel consumption of only 4.3 litre/100km, setting new standard in its segment,” says the German leading luxury car maker.

“Modern four-cylinder engines with turbocharging and direct injection as well as an eco-start-stop function as standard make for superior efficiency. The new GLA-class also takes the lead in its segment with its dynamic performance figure.

“Initially, the power range of the 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engines will  extend from 115kw (156 horse power) in the GLA 200 to 155 Kw (211 hp) in the GLA 250. The GLA 250 4MATIC sprints from zero to 100km/h in only 7.1 seconds, underlining the dynamic claim to the leadership of the GLA. It has a topspeed of 235km/h and a combined consumption figure of just 7.1/100km. There are also two diesel powerplant on the GLA lineup (2.0 and 2.2 litres).

The GLA is loaded with premium features like SUVs in the top-end luxury class. It is available with a new generation of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system featuring fully variable torque distribution. This system excels with high traction reserves and outstanding agility combined with superlative driving safety and energy efficiency.

The 7G-DCT automatic dual clutch transmission and rear-axle gear with integrated electrohydraulically  control multi-disc clutch delivers outstanding ride in the GLA class.

The chassis features a McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension while the body is extremely rigid for stable and safe handling both on and off the road.

Safety features in the GLA remains high as the car boasts similar safety equipment like the big SUVs.

As a trendsetter in its segment, the all new GLA has very attractive interior blended with quality materials. All trim surfaces are galvanised in silver-shadow for material authenticity, resulting in a metallic finish with cool-touch effect. The impression is one of perfect detail.
