Officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and Nigeria’s leading broadcast medium, Channels Television are putting finishing touches to a major youth championship aimed at identifying trainable young Nigerians in all parts of the country.
A statement by AFN’s Olukayode Thomas said the Championship will be called Channels TV Athletics Classics. It is the vision of Mr. John Momoh, the proprietor of Channels Television.
According to Thomas, the Championship will start at the state level where athletes will compete to represent their zones at the zonal level.
The zonal cham-pionship will be held in all the six geo-political zones. Winners at the zonal level will then compete at the national final.
Thomas says the championship is open to all secondary school students in all the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.
President of AFN Solomon Ogba commended the vision of Mr. Momoh. Said he: “We are grateful to Momoh. He started with football, now he is embracing athletics.
This championship is national and will give opportunity to young trainable athletes who will be trained to become world beaters in a few years, and the credit will go to Mr. Momoh and Channels TV for giving this opportunity to young athletes.”
