PORT HARCOURT— RIVERS State Government, yesterday, said it was fully in control of the security situation in the state.
State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, who spoke at her office in Port Harcourt, also dismissed as wishful thinking, speculations in some quarters that the game plan of five members of the state House of Assembly that are loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike was to impeach the governor of the state.
Meantime, Hundreds of youths under the aegis of Grassroots Development Initiative, yesterday, stormed the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, demanding the immediate reversal of the suspension of the Chairman, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mr Timothy Nsirim, his Vice and the 17 councillors of the council by the state Assembly.
It will be recalled that the elected council officials were suspended by the Assembly recently on account of alleged abuse of public funds and breach of security, while the state government went ahead to constitute a seven- man Caretaker Committee to run the council.
Semenitari, meantime, said “that a handful of lawmakers in Plateau State were able to cause a declaration of emergency rule in the state was not enough to conclude that such scenario could play up in Rivers State.”
Stressing that the state government had not lost grip of the security situation in the state, Semenitari said the people of Obio Akpor Local Government Area were comfortable with the action of the state House of Assembly.
