Last week I drew attention to this question of the loss of mission and the diminution of the enterprise of the Nigerian university. I pointed to the dire implications of “privatized” universities and university education, particularly in inadequate environments and limited structures, factors which lead to the production of ill-equipped, half-educated, and in fact dysfunctional university graduates.

One of the policies and strategies employed by developing economies to grow their industrial base is import substitution. Import substitution industrialisation strategy (ISI) involves producing locally, goods that were formerly imported.

Japanese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Ryuichi Shoji speaks on hinderances to Nigeria’s technological advancement and how his home country is helping to address them. Shoji also comments on the lessons Nigeria can learn from the tsunami and the attendant nuclear disaster that struck Japan about a year ago. Excerpt:
