Sterner action against sleaze – Cardinal Okogie

THE Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has called on Nigerians to emulate the selfless virtues of Jesus Christ who willingly laid down his life for the redemption of the world.

Easter marks the end of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance and commemorates the resurrection of Christ Jesus from death.

In his Easter message signed by Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Osu, Cardinal Okogie enjoined our political office holders in particular to adopt the servant-leader posture of Jesus Christ by striving tirelessly to better the quality of lives of the masses rather than engaging themselves in inordinate quest for wealth.

“This Easter offers all of us another opportunity to appreciate the invaluable sacrifice made by Jesus Christ by giving his very self for us all. If Christ who is God can willing-ly offer himself for us sinners, then who are we not to do same. We must appreciate the message and significance of Easter by learning to accommodate and share with one another.”

Speaking on the recent cases of corruption among some public office holders, the alleged embezzlement of pension funds and the on-going probe of the leadership of the nation’s Capital market, Okogie said government was not sincere in its purported  fight against corruption as culprits have continued to enjoy free reign.

“The government should stop selective justice. So many pro-bes have been carried out in the past with nothing to show for it. Who is fooling who? No one is above the law, anyone found guilty should be made to face the full wrought of the law to serve as deterrent to others,” he declared.
