ICAN should develop blueprint for anti-corruption – Gov

Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of  Kano State, has called on the  Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, to  champion the development of a blueprint to fight corruption in the country.

Kwankwaso who was represented by the State Auditor-General, Alh. Auwal Balarabe made this statement during the just concluded 7th Northern Districts Accountants’ Conference held in Kano.

“ICAN as a leading accounting profession in Nigeria should champion the course of developing a blue-print on how to eradicate corruption in Nigeria”, the Governor said while declaring the event open.  He said that the problem of Nigeria is not total dependence on oil revenue but corruption.

“The Nigerian economy would only move forward if corruption could be tackled through proper resource productivity and revenue assurance.”

On the other, the ICAN President, Prof. Francis Ojaide said it is indeed about justice, social inclusion and giving every Nigerian her rightful due at all times

Ojaide, also represented by his Vice President, Mr. Doyin Owolabi, commended the organizing committee for putting together the conference which is aimed at critically looking at the role of chartered accountants in enhancing the resources and revenue of the states.

Speaking on the theme of the conference; Resource Productivity and Revenue Assurance at States Level, he noted that resource control is the heart of ethics, macroeconomics and politics.

The conference featured two plenary sessions and technical workshops. The first paper during the plenary session dealt with the topic; “Utilising the provisions of Act 21 of 1998 on Taxes, Levies and other Changes for Effective Revenue Generation at state Level

The session on the Role of Chartered Accountants” was anchored   by Prof. Kabiru Isa Dandago, Chairman, Bayero Consultancy Services unit, Bayero University, Kano and Alh. Sani Kura, Director, Planning Research & Statistics, Kano State Board of Internal Revenue as paper presenter and discussants respectively.

The second paper focused on “Reducing the Cost of Governance for Revenue Assurance at States Level” by Prof. Gabriel Emecheta, Dean, Faculty of Administration, Nasarawa State University and Alh. Danjuma Garko former Accountant-General, Kano.
