By Ikechukwu Nnochiri
ABUJA—The Supreme Court will, today, determine the merit of two suits seeking to sack Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State from office.
A five-man panel of justices of the apex court had, on February 16, slated today for judgment on the two appeals lodged by Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its governorship candidate in Imo State, Mr. Ikedi Ohakim, and that of the governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, in the April 26 gubernatorial election in Delta State, Chief Great Ogboru.
Both appellants had canvassed reasons the certificates of return issued to the two governors by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should be revoked by the Supreme Court.
Ogboru had, through his counsel, Dr. Nwokoike Onwubiko, SAN, relied on the ruling in Ovmiami Brick & stone Vs ACB Ltd, 1992, 3 NWLR, pt 229, pg 260, to contend that the judgment of the Benin Division of the Court of Appeal was statute barred.
, considering that the appellate court gave reasons behind its verdict outside the 60 days period stipulated by section 285(7) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, for the determination of governorship election dispute.
