Oyo Assembly rejects Ajimobi’s SIEC, JSC nominees

By OLA AJAYI

IBADAN – OYO State House of Assembly has rejected Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s nominees for both the state Independent Electoral Commission and the Judicial Service Commission.

The reason for the rejection of the nominees was informed by the failure of the executive to keep the legislative arm abreast of the membership of the two commissions before they were announced on a state radio.

As a sign of its disapproval of the action of the executive, the legislators instructed the executive to first withdraw the announcement before they would look into it.

The 32-member legislative arm viewed the initial announcement on the radio as very embarrassing.

The two commissions were among the five boards that the House had intended to approve. Names of members of the commissions had already been announced on Wednesday before being forwarded to the House of Assembly for approval.

When the two lists of the nominees were presented to the House yesterday, Mr. Rafiu Adekunle, representing Saki West State constituency, objected their approval, saying it had not received the blessing of the House before being made public.

He then called on his colleagues to unanimously reject the lists.
