BY OLASUNKANMI AKONI & MONSUR OLOWOEPEJO

Lagos -Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ade Ipaye, yesterday, said the policeman, who allegedly shot a protester to death during Monday’s nationwide protest against removal of petrol subsidy in Ogba area of the state will be prosecuted.

Meanwhile, the state government has directed private medical practitioners and private hospitals in the state not to deny patients, especially those with gunshot wounds medical attention during the strike period.

Also, hoodlums on Monday looted Ojo Local Government Area Secretariat and shops in Lagos State.

Mr Ipaye said the state government will take the Divisional Police Officer attached to the Pen Cinema Police Station, identified as Mr Segun Olubunmi, Chief Superintendent of Police, who shot and killed a protester on Monday to court under the criminal law of Lagos State.

Though, the police officer had been arrested and detained for trial on the order of the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, Ipaye said: “It is an offence against the state law. He will be tried under the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

He said: “It is unfortunate. I obviously would not want to go by the story in the media. I am actually waiting to see the report of the investigation”. I am glad that the Commissioner of Police said they have apprehended the alleged culprit”.

and that they were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. As soon as they conclude that investigation, we will be willing to prosecute.”

While reassuring members of the public to remain calm over the incident, Ipaye said the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, would prompt the police to conclude its investigation on time.

“We know that somebody was killed, somebody has been apprehended. But we need to know the circumstances surrounding the shooting. ‘On the other hand, the Police need to speed up the investigation so that we will be able to prosecute the officer as soon as possible,” he added.

Similarly, Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, has urged the Inspector-General of Police to direct State Police Commissioners, where killings have taken place, to publish names of officers involved.
