Calabar— Federal Government has disclosed its intention to handover the Obubra Amnesty Camp used for the rehabilitation of former militants to Cross River State Government.
Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta and Chairman Presidential Committee on Amnesty, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, disclosed this when he led a delegation of the committee on a courtesy visit to Governor Liyel Imoke. He said the planned handover of the camp to the state will be after the final training of the last batch of the 6,166 expected to be in the first quarter of 2012.
Kuku commended Cross River State Government for accepting to host the programme, which commenced on June 5, 2010, saying that so far about 20,192 former militants had graduated from the phase one, while the remaining 6,166 will undergo training in the phase two.
He said the original owner of the camp, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, can use it for its orientation programme for the next batch of corps members scheduled for this month before the commencement of the second phase of the post amnesty programme in December.
According to him, the Presidency will finally handover the camp to the state government at the end of the programme.
Kuku, who promised to assist the state in its programme to transform the youth, said the amnesty programme had not recorded any death neither did it receive any external assistance from donor agencies, which made it a wholly “made in Nigeria” product.
