ABAKALIKI— WIFE of Ebonyi State governor, Mrs. Josephine Elechi, weekend called on the National Assembly and other stakeholders in judicial arm of government to provide stringent punishment for rapists in the country.
She stressed the need for relevant sections of the law on rape to be critically re-examined, considering widespread reports of how both young and aged women were being raped with impunity across the nation without the law taking effect.
Mrs. Elechi, who made the call during the flag-off campaign against maternal death at Obiozara, headquarters of Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state, emphasized the need for the law prohibiting rape to be reviewed as it did not provide sufficient protection for victims of rape.
She noted that as soon as the law on rape was reviewed to provide stringent punishment for offenders, the incidence of rape would drop drastically in no distant time.
