September 11, 2001 alias 9/11(2)

By Kola Animashaun
Two Sundays ago was the anniversary of the devastation that the world would rather forget. It was 10 years ago and the world has not allowed itself to forget.

Robert Peraza was father of Robert Peraza Jnr who died in the annihilation. Robert Jnr was  a rugby –player and of him Robert wrote:” Rob, we love you, we are with you all the time and we’ll never forget, we’ll never forget”

Robert Snr went on his knees and kissed the bronze parapet in which his son’s name was etched. Many others adopted poses that showed they mourned most sincerely- those who came to remember them-shed tears. It has been like that every 11th of September since 2002 anniversary.

*“I wish I’d known you better, but I was nine months old when you died. Everybody says you were a great guy. I love you, dad,”says a 10-year-old boy.

* GORDON Aamoth was a keen athlete and captain of his high school football team.  On the day before he died, aged 32, he clinched the largest deal of his career as an investment banker. He came to the World Trade Centre that morning to announce his success.

*Igor Zukelman was from the Ukraine. He arrived in New York in 1992 and he built a new life for himself in a financial company. He used to boast to friends that from his 97th floor office on the Twin Towers you could see the whole of New York City. He became an American citizen just months before he died, aged 29. He left behind a son, then aged 3.

*“Everyone has made a big deal about how its 10 years but the number doesn’t make a difference. It hurts just as much”, so said Beth Schaefer from Wisconsin, with tears in her eyes. Beth did not have a relation in the tragedy but was witness to it.

*One boy said he hadn’t been born on 9/11 but thanked his father for “giving me the gift of life … I wish you could be here to enjoy it with me”

Two thousand, nine hundred and seventy people died and that included 19 hijackers. Of the number, 67 died who were British. Among them were bankers, brokers, and journalists and computer experts. Almost half of those who died had children under 18.

The hijackers boarded the four planes at Boston, Newark and Washington that September morning ,and their brief was that then they were attacking the enemy of a monolithic   America. But were they?

It was like being taken on a journey around the world: Abad, Aceto, Acquavivo, Adanga, Afflito, Afuakwah, Agarwal, Agnello, Ahladiotis, Ahmed, Alikakos, Amanulla, Ang, Arczynski, Avrakam….The victims superintended the nations of the world. And they  were  of all creeds.

A way of gauging the scale of the tragedy was it took four and half hours to read out, in alphabetical order, the names of the victims.

What the terrorist are doing is that they are killing people of all   faiths including Muslims in Pakistan; in Iraq and in Yemen. Who else are they killing in Somalia and in Nigeria? They are killing people of all faiths as well as Muslims whatever they are called: be they an Al Shabab or Boko Haram; and the Quran did not instruct them to do that.

In Syria and in Libya they are killing predominantly Muslims in the political attrition that is going on.

President Obama and ex-president Bush and their wives were at the memorial; Prime Minister of Great Britain David Cameron and Prince Charles were in the United Kingdom anniversary.

It was a poignant day on that anniversary of September 11.For some disgusting news said that in Afghanistan at that weekend a Taliban truck bomb wounded 77 American soldiers and five Afghanistan civilians outside a combat output in eastern wardak provinces.

The wanton destruction continues!

Rogue Trader of London

I do not know how the Guinness Book of Records arrange the firsts. But the rogue trader of London may yet clinch the record. Because of his young age and is young experience. A suspect rogue was expected to have been arrested for costing the UBS $2b or £1.3b.Unfortunatly Kweku Adoboli, an investment banker, has stunned  UBS.

Adoboli comes from Ghana and has roots in Togo. He graduated from Nottingham University and he was only 21.

People are asking how he “racked up $2b loss without anybody noticing.

The banker lives in a £1,000 –a week flat in East London a and dressed very smartly.

Kweku Adoboli could join gallery of Rogues traders who brought banks to their knees.

One of the most notorious was British broker Nick Leeson, who destroyed the 233-year-old Barrings Bank, Leeson bet on the direction of Nikkei index in Singapore but set up a secret account to hide vast amount of money he lost. Auditors found losses of more than £800 million in 1995 and he fled the country.

Leeson was later jailed for six-and-half years. Last year, Jerome Kerviel, a trader at Societe Generale was convicted of losing the bank £3.7 billion.

He was sentenced to three years.

If   we can’t trust the banks  with our money, who can we   trust?
