Unilag decries strike, clears air on hazard allowance

THE University of Lagos, Unilag, yesterday, decried strike embarked upon by Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and Non Academic Staff Union, NASU, of the institution.

The university noted that the hazard allowance, which led to the strike was not for all staff of the institution.
Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr Seth Dare in a statement, said “For clarification, the hazard allowance being agitated for is not for every member of staff.”

He added that, “staff of the Unilag, who qualify for the allowance under the SSAN/NASU and FGN 2009 agreement are academic staff, non-academic staff, doctors and nurses”.

“Management had compiled the list of eligible staff as directed by the Council of the University for processing to Council for consideration. Management, therefore, appeals to staff to go about their normal duties without any fear of molestation,” he said.

He added that it was “unfortunate that a group of ill-advised members of staff took law into their hands by embarking on illegal strike, when examinations are taking place.”
