Jos – An 18-year-old student, Yahaya Mohammed, was on Friday arraigned before an Upper Area Court in Jos for stabbing his friend, Ibrahim Mamman.
Mohammed is accused of using a knife to stab his victim on the stomach.
The accused, a student of Government Day Secondary School, Gangare, Jos, who appeared before Malam Mustapha Hassan, was charged with causing grievous hurt.
The prosecutor, Mr Ashiru Ibrahim, told the court that the suspect committed the offence on June 9 about 11p.m. in Gangare area of Jos.
Ibrahim said that the accused stabbed his friend over a minor disagreement and that sympathisers rushed the victim to a hospital before handing over the suspect to the police.
“My lord, the victim is currently on a hospital bed; doctors have said that he is responding to treatment,’’ the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to section 245 of the Penal Code Law.
Under cross examination, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge while his counsel,
Ibrahim Shehu, applied for his release on bail.
Shehu told the court that the charge against his client was bailable and promised to present “reasonable sureties’’ for him.
But the prosecutor objected to the bail application on the ground that investigation into the matter was still going on.
“My lord, if the accused is granted bail, he might tamper with the police investigations,” he said.
The magistrate adjourned the case to June 22 for ruling on the bail application. (NAN)
