GOVERNORSHIP candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun; Chief Adetunji Olurin Thurday said that it was irresponsible for anybody to promise free education at all levels considering the huge debt profile of the state.
Olurin who also seized the opportunity to deny having any plans to step down from the governorship race said that with the debt profile, nobody would be able to do free education at all levels except the person would want the state to crumble.
Olurin at an interaction with professional groups in the state in Abeokuta said: “If the Governor would admit that the debt of the state was N20 billion, I am sure that it is more than that. He even said that we would have to borrow more to function. That means we will never come out of debt.
“So if my counterpart from another party is promising free education at all levels; it will not be possible. With the debt profile of this state, nobody can do that else the state will crumble. It is irresponsible for anybody to come out, despite our debt profile, promise free education at all levels.
“There is no better way to do it than to do progressive reduction of the school fees. You even know that the person’s party is ruling in Lagos and yet Lagos has not declared free education at all levels.”
Speaking against the backdrop of rumors that he would step down, he said “I am not going to step down. If it is their wish to carry false propaganda; then I say they are not ready for the election. No one should be under any illusion that I Adetunji Idowu Olurin would step down for anybody; unless they step down for me.”
Chief Olurin took a cursory look at the situation in the state and lamented that the everything including schools, roads, medical facilities and other infrastructure were in states of decay requiring rescue.
