Ogun Assembly: Bankole blames continued closure on Senate

By Kolade    Larewaju
ABEOKUTA – THE Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, has said the continued stalemate in the Ogun State House of Assembly which led to its closure in the past seven months was because the National Assembly did not pass a  resolution for the takeover of the House.

Bankole at an interactive session with newsmen, Monday, in Abeokuta said the passage of concurrence legislation by the Senate would have solved the problem and the National Assembly would have taken over legislation for the state.

He said: “It was not only in Ogun Assembly. Edo State also had similar problem. Ondo had the same problem and we passed a resolution. If the Senate does not conform to the resolution, that resolution may not have the force of law. So, I do not think the Senate conformed to that and therefore, it could not have the force of law.

Without concurrence from both arms of the National Assembly, the resolution would not be obeyed.”

Speaking on alleged attempts to remove him as Speaker by some members, Mr. Bankole described it as a storm in a tea cup adding that there was no such attempt.

He said “I am not aware of any motion moved on the floor of the House to impeach the Speaker of the House of Representatives. If you have, please show me. But I am aware that someone like you made all sorts of reports, based on information you must have got either from the House or otherwise.

“Until a motion is moved on the floor of the house and followed the process of impeachment, signature and the rest of them; then we can discuss issue of impeachment. In any case, members of the House are interesting characters and majority of us mean very well”
